From 24 to 27 September, join CLEVERFOOD across five sessions at one of the world's largest gatherings on food systems transformation to explore ways to support a fair, healthy, sustainable, circular and more plant-based food system.
In a few weeks, Slow Food will host the 16th edition of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto, one of the world’s largest gatherings on food systems transformation, bringing together farmers, fishers, cooks, food professionals, researchers, policymakers and civil society from across the globe. The official programme features five CLEVERFOOD sessions, organised by consortium partners Slow Food, Eurocities, the City of Milan / MUFPP and ZonMw / HDHL.
Across these sessions, CLEVERFOOD partners will explore how food environments, urban markets, public food procurement and participatory governance can support a fair, healthy, sustainable, circular and more plant-based food system. The programme connects local experience with policy development at municipal, national and European level, strengthening food justice, biodiversity, public health and climate resilience along the way.

24 September
- Shaping Food Environments to Advance Food Justice and the Right to Food (organised by Eurocities) — a roundtable on why improving food environments should become a core objective of the EU policy agenda, and on the role of local authorities in ensuring equitable access to affordable, healthy and sustainable food through public procurement and stakeholder engagement. Participants will also review the CLEVERFOOD Policy Brief “Improving Food Environments to Address Food Insecurity and Inequalities” (working title), feeding directly into its final drafting stage.
- The Role of Urban Markets for Sustainable Urban Food Policies (organised by the City of Milan / MUFPP) — an international roundtable bringing together municipal authorities, policymakers, agricultural networks and researchers to turn local best practices into scalable, cross-border policy recommendations on food markets in cities.
- From Dialogue to Policy and Action: Co-Designing the Story and Format of Healthy and Sustainable Food Policy Insights (organised by ZonMw / HDHL) — an interactive workshop with city governments, food policy councils and ministries of health, agriculture and food, shaping how the outcomes of 21 policy dialogues and roundtables held in 7 European countries are translated into practical, accessible formats.
25 September
- Making Sustainable Food Procurement Work: Cities, Producers and Cooks Collectively Shaping Public Meals (organised by Slow Food) — a practice-oriented workshop on sustainable public food procurement as a governance tool, bringing together municipalities, producers, cooks and practitioners to discuss access for small-scale producers, plant-rich and agroecological sourcing, and embedding climate and biodiversity objectives into procurement.
- Nourishing the Cities of the Future: Markets at the Core of Policy Agendas (organised by the City of Milan / MUFPP) — the concluding event of the CLEVERFOOD Italian National Dialogues, bringing together local, national and European policymakers to discuss governance approaches for urban markets. The session will also feature the signing of a Letter of Intent between the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact and the World Farmers Markets Coalition.
Across all five sessions, CLEVERFOOD will bring together cities, researchers, producers, cooks, public authorities and civil society organisations to foster peer learning, new partnerships and shared ownership of food systems transformation, turning dialogue into inclusive, participatory approaches with long-term impact for people, communities and the planet.
